Designed on Purpose 3: Gentle and Quiet Spirit

Written by  Jen Radl and Ilona Sewell, Boston Monday, 20 April 2009 15:58

Wives, in the same way be submissive to your husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives, when they see the purity and reverence of your lives. Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as braided hair and the wearing of gold jewelry and fine clothes. Instead, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight. For this is the way the holy women of the past who put their hope in God used to make themselves beautiful. They were submissive to their own husbands, like Sarah, who obeyed Abraham and called him her master. You are her daughters if you do what is right and do not give way to fear. (1 Peter 3:1-6)

What is “in the same way” referring to?

Our fears and anxieties often are what help us see our need for God. Often, we don’t really overcome these fears but are overcome by them. We respond in many different ways; lashing out; letting busyness and tasks mask the fears underneath; storing or “stuffing” them away somewhere; or we can become somewhat paralyzed in moving forward.

What are some scriptures where God teaches me about fear?

Read the following:

I will not fear the tens of thousands drawn up against me on every side. (Psalm 3:6)

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. (Psalm 23:4)

The Lord is my light and my salvation--whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life--of whom shall I be afraid? (Psalm 27:1)

He will have no fear of bad news; his heart is steadfast, trusting in the Lord. His heart is secure, he will have no fear; in the end he will look in triumph on his foes. (Psalm 112:7-8)

Have no fear of sudden disaster or of the ruin that overtakes the wicked (Proverbs 3:25)

So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. (Isaiah 41:10)

For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, "Abba, Father." (Romans 8:15)

…like Sarah, who obeyed Abraham and called him her master. You are her daughters if you do what is right and do not give way to fear. (1 Peter 3:6)

There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love. (1 John 4:18)

Read the following scriptures on fear God does want us to have. How does this kind of fear bring about a quiet and gentle spirit in our hearts and lives?

Oh, that their hearts would be inclined to fear me and keep all my commands always, so that it might go well with them and their children forever! (Deuteronomy 5:29)

So that you, your children and their children after them may fear the Lord your God as long as you live by keeping all his decrees and commands that I give you, and so that you may enjoy long life. (Deuteronomy 6:2)

The Lord commanded us to obey all these decrees and to fear the Lord our God, so that we might always prosper and be kept alive, as is the case today. (Deuteronomy 6:24)

As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him; (Psalm 103:13)

But from everlasting to everlasting the Lord's love is with those who fear him, and his righteousness with their children's children (Psalm 103:17)

The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life, turning a man from the snares of death. (Proverbs 14:27)

But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear him who, after the killing of the body, has power to throw you into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him. (Luke 12:5)

What are some ways the scriptures teach me to overcome the fears that keep my spirit from being gentle and quiet?

Pray specifically about your needs and ask others to pray for you. Deuteronomy 4:7; Ephesians 6:18; Philippians 4:6; Colossians 1:9; James 5:13-18

Memorize the scriptures that comfort and guide you in troublesome situations: Psalm 119:11,24; Jeremiah 29:11 Ephesians 6:10-15

Learn to be vulnerable and seek out help from others: Romans 15:14; 2 Corinthians 6:11-13; Psalm 40:11; Proverbs 20;:5 ; 1 Corinthians 13:6,7

List some scriptures I will put to memory that can help me overcome fears and put my trust in God.
