Cruising the Chronological Bible with Karen Louis

Entry one: January 1, 2008

Dear Readers,

Thanks to the popularity of “blogging”, I thought it would be fun to put my Quiet Time on the Singapore church website, and now I have been asked to do a column.

Whether or not anyone will actually read it is a different matter! Anyway, I like trying out different Bible versions, and after almost 30 years as a Christian, one of my favourite ways to spend time with God is to read the one year chronological Bible edited by F. LaGard Smith. Known by the titles, The Narrated Bible, and The Daily Bible, it is available on Amazon.com and in some Christian bookstores. This unique bible still uses the New International Version but adds very helpful notes and puts things in order of occurrence historically. Therefore, I am entering my thoughts by topic, not according to the order of the books of the bible. (For example, entries from “The Law of Moses” include readings from Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy. Likewise, “The Life of David” will include readings from 1 Samuel, 2 Samuel, some of 1 Kings, and some Psalms.) At any rate, I will give you the references for my entries, so you won’t be confused no matter which version you are using. If you choose to follow along with my predicted schedule (assuming both my computer and brain don ’t crash!), then we will all finish the bible in one year, Lord willing. By the way, I should warn you that I do have a tendency to get on a soapbox from time to time, and of course I have my biases and blind spots just like everyone else, so please feel free to ignore anything I have written and just stick to the bible verses!! On top of that, after living in different countries for the past 30 years, I mix up my spelling, sometime using British, sometime American (programme, program). Please forgive my lack of congruency and frequent rambling. Hopefully some of my musings will strike a chord. Either way, I hope we all get closer to God through his word in 2008. So, happy reading!

Much love in Christ, and best wishes for the New Year,

Karen McDonald Louis, Singapore January 1, 2008
