An Announcement From HOPE worldwide's CEO

Dear friends of HOPE worldwide,

In 1991 our fellowship of churches, under the leadership of Bob and Pat Gempel, founded HOPE worldwide. This organization was created in response to the example of Jesus’ ministry of compassion to help the poor and needy. In 2008 the baton of leadership was passed to me as I assumed the office of Chief Executive Officer of HOPE worldwide following 12 years of serving in the roles of both General Counsel and Chief Operating Officer.

South Asia Tsunami Revisited

December 26, 2014 - Today marks the 10th anniversary of the worst tsunami disaster in human history. More than 228,000 people died in 14 countries in Southeast Asia and South Asia, and as far away as Africa.

In all, nearly 2.5 million people were affected, losing their families, their homes, and their means of making even a meager living. Many of the people were already vulnerable and living in desperate poverty. Households headed by women particularly were pushed deeper into poverty. When the tsunami was finished, it was the most destructive disaster of its kind in history.

Ebola Update from Guinea

November 6, 2014 -- Ebola has devastated many families in Guinea. My brother-in-law has lost a great number of family members. His father, mother, children and other close relatives died in less than two months. A total of 17 people from that family have succumbed to the epidemic. Another family, who had hosted many people, were hospitalized. Now their house is closed and no one is living there. The only survivor from that household is a young man, who suffers from a mental disability. They have other family members, but none are living in Guinea. Fear has seized the hearts of their neighbors and friends.
