The 29 disciples and the people of St. Vincent and the Grenadines request your prayers and support as we continue to recover from the effects of severe floods and landslides that occurred on Christmas Eve (December 24, 2013). The floods and landslides were as a result of an unexpected low-level trough system and resulted in significant damage to our road network and water system, the destruction of homes and most sadly, the loss of lives.
Nine people are confirmed dead and three are still missing in the wake of the events. Though globally this may seem like a small number, it is significant for a country with a population of just over 100,000 people. Thankfully, all the disciples and their immediate families were spared from any loss, but our hearts go out to those who are still suffering at this time. Our National Emergency Management Office (NEMO) reports that nearly 2,400 people are displaced by the destruction of 495 homes were damaged, 40 of which were completely destroyed. Presently, there are 188 persons living in emergency shelters throughout the country. In the short and medium term, food and other supplies are needed for the people currently living in emergency shelters. Food supplies needed include canned meats and vegetables, sugar, tea bags, milk, rice, box juices etc. Some of the other supplies include mattresses, sheet sets, disposable dinnerware and cutlery, toiletries, disposable diapers (assorted sizes) and paper towels.
The disciples here in St. Vincent are working in partnership with HOPE worldwide Caribbean to serve our countrymen. If you are moved to contribute to this outreach effort you can direct your donation to HOPE worldwide, ATTN: HOPE worldwide Caribbean.
