Cyclone Winston in Fiji

I live in Melbourne, Australia and manage HOPE worldwide Australia. In December of last year I had the fortune of serving with volunteers at the HOPE Youth Corps in Fiji and when I heard about the cyclone that struck last weekend, I was eager to know how everyone was doing. I spent quite a bit of time this week on the phone to Alex Hernandez, who leads the churches in Fiji and lives in Suva. Through repeatedly broken calls, he gave me an update on how things are going. Many places are still without power or water. There was a lot of flooding with high sea levels and many homes were swept away by wind and water. Please be praying for the disciples, the wider community and the ongoing relief effort!

Flooding Paralyzes Jakarta

Torrential rains in Jakarta, Indonesia are finally starting to subside following paralyzing flooding in the city that began on Sunday night.  Rivers, canals, flood plains and drainage systems could not hold the heavy influx of water and flooding spread into the streets and homes.  Massive traffic jams caused by flooded streets full of people trapped in their vehicles ground the city of 12 million people to a halt.  The combination of the heavy rains, unfinished construction of canals, high sea levels and insufficient coordination of the city’s water pumps have contributed to the flooding problem in Jakarta, where 40 percent of the city is located under sea level. More storms are anticipated to worsen the situation later this week.

Japan: Three Years Later, Hope Remains

Disaster Response Report

March 11, 2014 marks the third year anniversary of the massive earthquake and tsunami that left a path of death and destruction. Today, HOPE worldwide Japan is continuing to serve in Watari, a town severely affected by the mega earthquake and tsunami of 2011. Approximately 270 residents lost their lives and 30% of the houses and buildings were destroyed. Even after three years, many residents are unable to return home and are still living in temporary housing. We are grateful for the support of our donors, who have enabled us to continue helping so many affected by this great disaster.
