Disaster Response ReportMarch 11, 2014 marks the third year anniversary of the massive earthquake and tsunami that left a path of death and destruction. Today, HOPE worldwide Japan is continuing to serve in Watari, a town severely affected by the mega earthquake and tsunami of 2011. Approximately 270 residents lost their lives and 30% of the houses and buildings were destroyed. Even after three years, many residents are unable to return home and are still living in temporary housing. We are grateful for the support of our donors, who have enabled us to continue helping so many affected by this great disaster.
HOPE worldwide Therapy Program
In 2013, 2,628 people benefitted from a number of therapy classes using flowers and gardening. Approximately 350 participated regularly in the floral arranging classes and 22 grew vegetables and harvested crops.
The HOPE worldwide Japan Therapy GardenSince the garden opened in 2012, we have had visitors stop by on a consistent basis from the neighborhood as well as those from out of town. Our vision for the garden is that it would become an oasis – a place where the beauty of nature can relax and comfort those who visit.
The therapy garden is becoming a place for locals to gather. People of all ages visit our garden every day. One regular visitor told us, “This is my favorite thing to do every morning, just to rest and watch those beautiful flowers in this garden.” Some visitors lend a helping hand to clean or water the garden. We are happy to report that the garden is becoming a part of this community and many friendships are growing as a result. This is our vision for the garden, and we are amazed to see our dream come true.
Daily children from a local kindergarten visit the garden. It is our hope that the children will develop a caring and loving heart for life and sensitivity for all of God’s creations. It is fun to watch these children, who are between the ages of one and six, running around the garden and asking a lot of questions. A number of them show a strong interest in the garden and some even research the plants with the help of botanical books. This fall, HOPE worldwide and the school are planning to hold special activities and learning opportunities for children.
Getting Everyone on BoardAlthough there are a number of female participants, we had a need for male volunteers. We developed a furniture-building program to involve men from the community. It was successful and for the first time, we had a large group of male participants. They teamed up to build garden benches and tables. As they helped each other build furniture, they also built new friendships. Some of them have become regular visitors to our garden.
Rooted in the Community
Our biggest challenge is fast growing weeds. Sometimes neighbors help us weed, but we are surprised at how quickly the weeds return. Many of the local residents are farmers and experts in dealing with this problem so we have asked them for their help and support. These same people now help on a weekly basis. They tell us, “You have given so much to us. We are glad that now we can give back a little to you.” With their help, we have been able to maintain the beautiful garden. We are encouraged by the willingness of our neighbors to get involved, and how the garden is becoming an essential part of this community. Our vision for the garden is for it will continue to be enjoyed and lovingly maintained by the local community.
HOPE worldwide Job Assistance Program
In June 2013, we began a brand new program for disaster victims and people with disabilities. Our goal is to meet the needs of families in Watari by offering work training and experience. In 2013, 14 people benefitted from this program in 2013.
The HOPE worldwide Japan Distribution Outlet “Ichigo-Ichie”
We opened a store called “Ichigo-Ichie” that sells baked goods and vegetables. Fresh vegetables are delivered every day from nearby farms. The opening of our store was reported by one of the major newspapers in the Tohoku area. The mayor also sent a message expressing his appreciation to HOPE worldwide Japan and our contribution to the community.
Our CustomersWe have had a variety of customers including; students, children, seniors with their grandchildren and those with disabilities. We are greatly encouraged by the support from our neighbors and how they welcomed us into their community.
Our Employees
Ichigo-Ichie started with two employees and now we have 14 people working with us. Most have disabilities and had been unemployed for a long time. They are extremely grateful for the opportunity to work again. At first, they were nervous about the new experience, but they are now at ease and greet all our customers with a big smile!
Our Vision
The facility has the capacity for 20 employees. We are looking forward to training additional individuals with disabilities and earthquake victims currently living in temporary housing. With the help of the community, we look forward to helping even more people reintegrate into society.
