Indonesia-Floods Bing-640x405 cJanuary 20, 2014 - Heavy rains and weather anomalies brought floods to several cities across Indonesia, especially in the northern part of Java island and several cities in Sulawesi. The most destructive floods are in Jakarta and in Manado.

JAKARTA

Located  in the bay of Jakarta, the old city is in the path of rain water from surrounding highlands in Bogor district, just south of the country's capital. The run off is caused by deforestation, settlements by the rivers, urbanization, lack of proper drainage systems along with years of poor city planning in this area where 40% of the land is under sea level.

17% of Jakarta was reported flooded by the Provincial Disaster Management Agency (BPBD).  The most affected areas are located in North Jakarta.

As of January 20, 2014 at 09.00 AM, many locations in Jakarta are still flooded, and more rain is in the forecast.

MANADO

Rains that began on January 14 have brought flash flooding to Manado. By January 15 most of the city was flooded, also cutting off several roads and bridges.

HOPE worldwide relief teams are working closely with local volunteers and supporters to bring relief. Those impacted are in need of food, water, clothes, blankets, medical attention, and psychosocial activities for the children.

HOPE worldwide is currently monitoring the situation closely to determine the next steps needed to reduce casualties and bring relief.
