Singapore Teens Serve Needy Children

by Wednesday, 04 February 2009 11:01
In mid-November, about 40 teen volunteers gave a group of underprivileged children (age 5-12) an unforgettable excursion to Sentosa Island. With the kind support of Sentosa management, the children enjoyed free admission onto the island and had a morning of fun and games.

The theme of the race was “Unlock Your Potential”. The children were paired with teen volunteers in groups, racing around various checkpoint stations, and working together to complete challenges, earning lettered keys, and solving clues for the next station.

Teens often fall under the generalization of knowing little about Jesus and his profound effect in the world we live in today. A few months ago in Burbank, California, a teen rally faced this issue head-on with the theme of “The Jesus I Never Knew.” Teens from all over Los Angeles and San Diego joined together to learn and to either bolster or alter their varying views on the real Jesus.
Are you ready to be a hero who changes the world or will you let the world change you?

Last weekend 89 teenagers, plus adults, drove up to Sebring, Florida for a spiritual retreat.  The theme for the weekend was Heroes.  The teenagers were inspired to consider both that Jesus is the ultimate hero and that they can be heroes who change the world.

Christian & Luz Amestoy
The message was brought home by Christian and Luz Amestoy (leaders of the Santiago, Chile Church).  They encouraged and challenged the teens with a sermon entitled “Heroes Who Change the World”.  Christian, preaching for the first time in English, opened the eyes of the young audience with ways the teens can meet needs at home and abroad.

Let Adrian Hill and Dave Pocta take you Back to the Future!  Lessons from last year's Florida Regional Conference of Youth and Family Ministry are now available on this website (in the audio section).

Hear Adrian Hill (London) teach parenting classes on loving teenagers and forming Christ in them.  Additionally, listen in as Dave Pocta (Chicago) teaches on the importance of ministry staff emphasis on youth, why family must be incorporated into youth ministry, and the challenges of understanding this newest generation of teenagers.

And now, brothers, we want you to know about the grace that God has given the Macedonian churches. Out of the most severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity. For I testify that they gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability. Entirely on their own, they urgently pleaded with us for the privilege of sharing in this service to the saints. 2 Corinthians 8:1-4

Taking inspiration from their first century heroes, the teenagers of the Northwest Region of the Boston Church of Christ set out to sacrifice like never before for the IMS Missions Contribution this year. While many of their peers complain about what they don’t have, these teens “pleaded with us for the privilege of sharing in this service to the saints” of Europe and New England. In 2007 the ministry had a goal of $2007. They rejoiced as they met their goal by giving $2013.

A Sampling of Youth & Family Good News...

Nearly 18 months ago, the church in Kiev, Ukraine began to implement youth and family ministry. The number of teenage disciples has grown from 11 to 43 disciples during that span of time.

Who says teens cannot contribute financially to evangelize the world? The Boston Church of Christ Teen Ministry gave $7000 to special missions this year.

"They spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all the others in his house. At that hour of the night the jailer took them and washed their wounds; then immediately he and all his family were baptized." (Acts 16:32-33) This spring, two Tallahassee teens and their parents all made the decision to become Christians, together as a family.

“The girls have been after us on and off for some time to do this” said John Sackreiter.“
