The Haiti Church - One Year Later

Monday, 31 January 2011 07:33

2010 was undoubtedly the most difficult year in the history of the church in Haiti. The events of the year began on January 12, 2010 with an earthquake having a magnitude 7.3 that struck the country and claimed the lives of 9 of our members: 7 adults and 2 children. Here is how God has worked and blessed us since.

The earthquake destroyed dozens of houses and damaged many others. This resulted in a great number of homeless in the aftermath of this catastrophe. Great was the number of those who were physically wounded and psychologically troubled and traumatized.

After the earthquake we also had to face many other challenges such as:

A) Hurricane Thomas that occasioned great fear in the heart of so many people. According to the weather predictions that were announced at the beginning of November, the alert was at the highest level. Great loss was expected in terms of human life and we feared that Thomas, due to our vulnerable and precarious situation, would wash out everything that remained standing after the earthquake.

B) The news reports that reached us concerning Thomas really whipped us emotionally. We thought that every tent would be torn apart by the hurricane. I remember taking the time with the entire church at our midweek service on November 4 to pray concerning the hurricane. We prayed to our Heavenly Father saying, “Lord, we know that you control the entire universe. The winds, the rain, are natural phenomena that you direct through your word. Make it so that, even though the predictions announce that Thomas will not spare Haiti, that it actually is diverted to the sea or a desert.”

We prayed and God granted our request. This promise made by God in 1 cor. 10 :13 was fulfilled in our situation in the church and in the country ; we were tested but our faithful God did not allow it to go beyond our ability to endure. Finally, we escaped Thomas since no damage was recorded.

To God be the Glory!

What is the other piece of news that is on everyone’s mind in Haïti?

We are presently in the middle of a Cholera epidemic that rages against the country since October. More than 2,500 people have died already. And more than 20,000 people are being treated in health centers. The authorities, it seems, are overwhelmed by these events. There are certain parts of the country where things are worst: Cap-Haitian, Mirebalais where it began. Also les Irois and Port-au-Prince. We have disciples in every one of those cities, but until now God has come to our rescue because not one disciple has been affected. See Psalm 91

Once again, to God be the glory!

In this next paragraph, I would like to thank disciples all over the world. We are at the end of the year 2010, however, I see even now all the challenges we have faced.

The disciples in Haïti could not have remained standing up to this day without your prayers, your affection, and your money. That is why Junie and I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of the whole church to say :

THANK YOU!

Special thanks for the HOPE WORLWIDE team and HOPE HAITI. They gave themselves body and soul to support the church and also the Haitian community. Even if we had money, without the support of these men and women who used their know-how to serve us, we would not have been able to do as much. I also thank all the leaders of the churches in the provinces who collaborated with us in those difficult moments.

Lastly, I would like to share some good news with you. Though this was in every aspect the most difficult year for the church in Haiti, we have nonetheless helped 150 people to enter the Kingdom of God! Here is the list...

Baptisms / Restorations by City 2010

PORT-AU-PRINCE 46 / 11
CARREFOUR+BERLY 9 / 0
MIREBALAIS 6 / 0
MONT-ROUIS N/A
CAP-HAITIEN 43 / 4
BODARIE 16 / 3
CAYES 6/1
IROIS 5/0

TOTAL 131/19

Another inspiring bit of news is that in 2010 the church’s contribution doubled from what was given in 2009. How is this possible?
I believe it is because people are grateful for what God has done for us in 2010. As the Psalmist says “The Lord has done great things for us and we are rejoicing…Psalm 126

We also had a few weddings!

And finally, I would like to give you a picture concerning how we concluded the year ... with our annual banquet celebration.
