HOPE worldwide Nepal: Asha Vidyashram School, Report of February 2013
Successful story of a HOPE student
Savitry Caudhary (20), is an alumni of the HOPE school. She had enrolled in 1998. She is now an entrepreneur and student, owning a neighborhood grocery shop whilst also pursuing a bachelor’s degree in pharmacy. She currently lives happily with her parents and two siblings.
Being the eldest of three siblings, life has not always been easy for Savitry growing up, nor for her family. Her parents had a small area of land they relied on to feed the family daily, but it barely sufficed. The family migrated to Kathmandu in hope of a better life. Her parents worked hard on everything they could get their hands on, mainly as temporary labourers. Even then, they only earnt just enough for the family of five. The struggle worsened when it was time for Savitry to enter school.
Much to the family’s delight, Savitry enrolled to the HOPE School in 1998. Starting out as an average pupil, she proved herself to be a bright and talented child as she grew. She received a full scholarship to Swati Sadan Boarding High School in Kathmandu upon graduating from the HOPE school.
Her life as an entrepreneur began after she graduated from high school. She opened an initially small neighborhood shop selling daily necessities, which has substantially grown over the few years. Upon being asked about her choice to further her study in the pharmaceutical field, she answered, “There are many medical companies coming up in Nepal. The chance to be successful is very high.”
Currently, Savitry is happily living with her parents and siblings. Her dad is working as a plumber and her mother helps Savitry in the grocery shop. She is grateful to HOPE for the helps provided in her time of need.
The Mid‐day Meal Program was launched this month. Thia had been a dream for many years. The children who attend the HOPE school are very poor and sometimes their parents cannot afford to feed. They come to school hungry. That affects their health but also their ability to study properly. Who can learn on empty stomach? The program provides nutritious meals to the children of the Asha Vidyashram HOPE School. Because of the generosity of friends of HOPE like yourselves, 150 children who otherwise could not afford mid‐day meals, are able to eat during the long hours of school.
Friends of HOPE and gracious volunteers, Stefanie Christanti (Singapore) and Michelle Liu (Hong Kong), visited the Asha Vidhyashram School and served as relief teachers for a week. The subjects they taught ranged from art, craft, and team building. Aside from teaching, Stefanie and Michelle also visited the children’s homes, blessing the children with their companionship, love, and gifts.
These volunteers have brought joy in the lives of the students and teachers. Big‐hearted volunteers are always welcomed with open arms in the Asha Vidhyashram School.
