MLK Day 2011 - HOPE worldwide volunteers served 119 cities

Wayne, PA
– HOPE worldwide wants to thank the 8,100 volunteers across the country that have spoken with their hard work rather than just words to promote the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy. Volunteers across the country took to the streets last weekend with some facing five-degree weather and two feet of snow to serve and educate their neighbors.

Antonio Boyd, Vice President of North American Programs, congratulated those who participated, saying, "Each year HOPE worldwide volunteers answer the call of service to their neighbors on MLK Day. I am especially proud of the over 8,100 volunteers in 119 communities who served on the 25th Anniversary of the Martin Luther King Holiday. Happy Birthday, Dr. King."

Chapters Mobilized To Serve Their Communities
HOPE worldwide Chapters participated in a total of 93 different volunteer events, accumulating over 36,500 hours of service in 29 states. Thirty-three Chapters of HOPE worldwide collaborated with the American Red Cross to participate for the fourth consecutive year in the Fire Preparedness Reach Out program. Chapters involved with the Red Cross-sponsored program used data from local fire departments to identify neighborhoods with high rates of home fires. Once areas were targeted, Chapters mobilized their volunteers to distribute home fire prevention information and engage in conversations about home fire safety with interested residents. Other service projects ranged from feeding the homeless to winterizing homes in lower income neighborhoods.
