During 2010, the HOPE worldwide Gainesville Chapter volunteers donated 37 pints in January, 32 pints in May, and 46 in October to LifeSouth community blood center, sole provider for Shands, the Virginia and North Florida Regional Medical Center. Up to four units of blood are required for a lung transplant and up to thirty units for a liver transplant. At $100 per unit, this creates a hardship for those in need. Each pint donated saves three lives, as it is broken down into platelets, plasma and whole blood. Thus, they donated a grand total of 115 pints or 345 LIVES SAVED!
Also, as part of Gainesville Christian Church's 2010 Month of Hope, in conjunction with the HOPE worldwide Gainesville Chapter, Hank and Allison Middleton organized a canned food drive with their partner Bread of the Mighty Food Bank. They distributed 1,000 more bags, expanding to three more neighborhoods. Their goal this past year was 3,000 pounds of food. They collected 3,600 pounds, and surpassed their record as the largest single donation to the Bread of the Mighty Food Bank, which distributes food to needy people in the Gainesville area.
