Staten Island Disciples Are Spared
As people emerge from their homes and lights and power flicker back to life, the disciples in the New York / New Jersey area are rolling up their sleeves to help. Staten Island, one of the five boroughs in New York City,was hammered by what appears to be the largest Atlantic hurricane on record. It is by the grace of God and his almighty power that all the Staten Island disciples have been spared and are now lending a much needed helping hand to the many residents here who desperately need help.

Monday, November 12, 2012- The response by the New York and New Jersey churches and the disciples, together with the HOPE worldwide Chapters, to the victims of Hurricane Sandy has been incredible.
NY Disciple and Firefighter Recounts the Night Disaster Struck Home
“It's something that you would think goes on in some far off place, not New York City.”
As the relief efforts continues on Staten Island with no end in sight, firefighter and disciple Bill Patsakos, gives a little insight to the occurrences on the night of Hurricane Sandy's arrival. Bill, a loving husband and father of four school-age boys, was stationed in one of the boats patrolling Staten Island's northeastern coastline at the height of the storm. He recounts a 14-foot wall of water that surged a mile and a half into Staten Island and compared the onslaught's magnitude to the likes of Katrina or a large tsunami. The stories that followed were equally horrifying.

Hurricane Sandy was the most devastating storm to hit the Northeast in recent history. Local HOPE worldwide volunteers are on the ground helping neighbors regain hope during a desperate time A total of 587 HOPE worldwide volunteers have stepped up to help communities in need in New Jersey and New York. Some volunteers, like those they are serving, do not have electricity, shelter and sometimes food. Despite these obstacles, needs are being met within the church family. The spirit of love and cooperation is being demonstrated as volunteers of all ages pitch in to do whatever is necessary for their friends, families and communities.

Over the past few weeks, I have been visiting HOPE worldwide programs in Nigeria and India. My schedule has been packed, but I wanted to say how very proud I am of the many wonderful volunteers of HOPE worldwide who have stepped forward to serve those in need in the Northeast.

HOPE worldwide's Community Service Division is actively responding to the disaster Hurricane Sandy. Immediately following the storm, volunteers from HOPE worldwide's Central Jersey and Tri-State Chapters began assisting in disaster relief efforts with our partners, including the American Red Cross.
