Texas-Floods-4May 27, 2015 — As severe storms moved through Southeast Texas again late Monday into early Tuesday morning, high water and flooding made many of Houston’s roads impassable, prompting officials to urge residents to stay home.

Torrential rains sent Houston bayous out of their banks overnight, flooding hundreds of homes and stranding thousands of drivers. Houston firefighters report they’ve been called to more than 500 water-related rescues.

At least 18 people have died in Texas and Oklahoma from the storms and flooding with 13 people still missing. An estimated 1,400 homes have been damaged in Wimberley, and more than 4,000 homes were damaged in Houston.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has declared disasters in 46 counties and is asking the federal government for assistance.

HOPE worldwide, through the US Disaster Services Team, is working closely with local Texas Chapters to mobilize resources and volunteers to help and support families. The volunteers are coordinating with the American Red Cross as well as local authorities managing the crisis.

More rain is forecast in Texas and Oklahoma from Wednesday through Sunday which could lead to additional flash flooding in areas already affected from the relentless storms.
