"Third Grade Reads" mobilizes people across the Baltimore to volunteer as reading tutors for 1st thru 3rd grade kids who are reading below their grade level. On January 19, 2013, Mayor Stephanie Rawlings Blake made a call to the faith-based community to step up and be "Reading Angels" to Baltimore's children. This was part of a MLK Day of service event.
As part of the call, the HOPE Story Tree Gang of teens and preteens, performed Read a Book to a packed house at Forest Park Community Church. The story of Rappin' Grandma Dot who takes the kids on their first trip to the library inspired many in attendance to sign up and share the joy of reading with a child in need. The Mayor's volunteer coordinator could not have been more please with the outcome and the enthusiasm for reading the HOPE Story Tree Gang brought to the event.
