April 15: Abidjan Update

Monday, 18 April 2011 11:36

Our brothers and sisters in Abidjan continue to face enormous challenges. Although the former president has been arrested, some of his supporters continue to hold out in parts of the city. Looters are attacking civilian homes as the new government is slowly trying to restore order. Food is scarce and what food can be found, is very expensive.

Public services are slowly coming back on line, the dead bodies are being collected from the streets and debris is slowly being cleared as well. The disciples need our continued prayers.

Thanks to the aid that has been given from many disciples around the world, two brothers were able to go to Lome’, Togo, where all the aid is temporarily being sent until the banks re-open in Abidjan. They were able to get some of the money and bring it back to be distributed to the different regions of the church in Abidjan. In this way, each region has been able to give an average of around $50 to each family to help them buy food for the next few days.

Medicine is also scarce. In fact, one of the only two doctors on duty at a major hospital is a disciple. He has been there for days attempting to treat hundreds of sick and wounded people with virtually nothing. Another disciple, Isaac, was hit in the leg by stray bullets and lay in the street for three hours until the fire fight died down enough for another disciple to come and get him. He is stable now but the bullets are still in lodged in his thigh.

The 130 refugees on the church property are all safe. Again, food is hard to come by, but they regularly head out into the neighborhood to help other people who have even less than they do. They are truly being a light in a time of great darkness.

The disciples still need so much help, the city is a literal warzone, many have lost everything, and donations are still badly needed.

Please continue to pray, please continue to give and may God bless the Ivory Coast.
