Volunteers Poised to Serve in More Than 60 Communities Nationwide
Wayne, PA – Out of hopeful longing for a better future, Martin Luther King, Jr. said, “I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: that all men are created equal.”
Despite incredible hardship, Dr. King remained a visionary. In celebration of his dream of a better America, HOPE worldwide volunteers along with the American Red Cross and other local community organizations plan to serve in more than 60 cities across the United States on MLK Day – and the number is still growing. HOPE worldwide is preparing to mobilize volunteers from Chapters nationwide to serve on this nationally-recognized day of service to bring hope to an estimated 100,000 underprivileged Americans.
HOPE worldwide volunteers will canvass at-risk neighborhoods with home fire prevention information. This canvassing campaign is a continuation of HOPE worldwide's four-year collaboration with the American Red Cross' fire preparedness outreach program. Volunteers will distribute fire safety pamphlets and discuss fire prevention tactics with interested residents in an effort to reduce the number of home fires. HOPE worldwide is providing this service in both English and Spanish in select areas, and residents will receive fire detectors if needed. Other HOPE worldwide Chapters plan to host food drives and blood drives, participate in neighborhood clean-up efforts, and assist the elderly with household maintenance projects.
Taking a day on and not a day off on MLK Day, HOPE worldwide will begin sponsoring the aforementioned service projects on January 17th out of respect to Dr. King and his vision and call to serve others. Since the inception of the King Holiday and Service Act, Americans have benefitted from this day of service and HOPE worldwide is excited to take part once again in giving back to the community on this special day.
