Disciples Start Charity for Haiti

Monday, 13 April 2009 16:24

Rather than chase the American Dream, three brothers decide to start a charity to help the people of Haiti. Read the encouraging story.

My name is Stanley Dumornay. I was born in New York and grew up in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. I came back to NY years later to go to College. My desire was to become a successful engineer and live the American Dream. God, however, had greater plans for my life! As a freshman in college, I became a Christian. After my senior year, I graduated as a mechanical engineer. Rather than chase after the world, I went back to Haiti to work as a missionary. There I lived six of the most meaningful years of my life. I returned to the U.S in 2000 and I have been living there since, with my wife Marie and children Esaie and Nina.

I need Haiti. Though I spent most of my childhood in Haiti I was shielded from the reality of its extreme poverty. Working there as missionary opened my eyes and my heart to the plight of the Haitian people. Since I have moved back to the U.S, I have been able to visit Haiti every year to help with the church. After each visit, I always come back with a softer heart. God uses Haiti to help transform in me to be more like Jesus

Last year I got a phone call from a brother, who is a dentist, in Dallas who had been to Les Cayes (in the south of Haiti) to do some dental work with a charity group. He came back to the U.S with a conviction that he had to do something to help Haiti. Aware that one of Haiti's biggest problems is corruption, Fred believed that if we started a church of true disciples then the lack of trust would no longer be an issue. We could then raise money and rely on those Christians to help meet the needs of the poor in Les Cayes.

I told Fred about my best friend Reggie Lambert. Like me, Reggie is of Haitian descent and is an engineer educated in the U.S. Reggie left the U.S and moved to Haiti to work as a missionary and stayed there until he got shot and almost lost his life. Fred, Reggie and I met in Miami last month. Fred and I were just returning from Haiti, Reggie drove from Orlando. The excitement we felt was tremendous as we contemplated what God could do through us to help Haiti. After much time spent in prayer and many conversations we decided to open a non-profit 501c3 called Haitian Support.

Our goal is that through benevolent work to show the love of God to a people who desperately and urgently need it.

In Him,

Stanley Dumornay
