SHCH lightens life’s burdens for patients.
Phnom Penh, Cambodia – The Sihanouk Hospital Center of HOPE (SHCH), managed by HOPE worldwide, is more than just an institution. It is a place where Cambodia’s poorest are cared for, shown compassion and treated with respect.

“It’s the culture in Cambodia to serve your guests water, even if you are poor,” said Savoeun Choen, Hospitality Associate. “This [hospital] is my home and all the people here are my guests.”

For many patients it is a struggle to meet basic needs while they receive treatment, such as having clean drinking water and food to eat. These are heavy burdens most cannot afford, and add to the strain of their illnesses.

Executive Director, Kevin O’Brien created the Hospitality Department in July 2009 to help patients feel more comfortable.

“We can’t guarantee that every patient who steps through our doors will be healed,” said O’Brien, “but we can guarantee that every patient receives care and compassion. Showing hospitality is a tangible way to do this.”
