Breaking Barriers: Cross-Cultural Worship

Friday, 13 November 2009 14:07

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said, "At 11:00 on Sunday morning when we stand and sing and Christ has no east or west, we stand at the most segregated hour in this nation." An honest look at American culture confirms this.

Churches tend to be predominately "Black," or "White," or "Filipino." When Jesus calls us into his Kingdom, he demands that we let go of the prejudices that often define us.

In the Chicago Church of Christ, our almost 2,000 members come from backgrounds consistent with the demographic of Chicagoland - we are black, white, Hispanic, African, Asian, etc.; we are rich, poor, and in-between; we are old and young and middle-aged.

Historically, our congregation has enjoyed a fairly typical European, 4-part a cappella approach to our musical worship. As the church has grown in number and diversity, we have seen that to truly meet the needs of every worshipper, our worship needs to be as diverse as our membership and the demographics of our city.

On November 22nd, we want to begin a crucial conversation with the goal of creating a deep and profound unity and mutual understanding between worshippers of all races, backgrounds, and ethnicities. We will begin with a Cross-cultural panel discussion where we frankly and openly discuss differences in culture and musical preference, and will follow that with a concert highlighting these different styles and approaches. We hope you can join with us in this important discussion.

For His Glory,
Dave Eastman
Minister and Worship Leader
Chicago Church of Christ
