Miami School of Missions Continues to Grow Featured

The Miami School of Missions (MSOM) kicked off 2014 with over 50 visiting ICOC church leaders from 14 different countries in Latin America and the Caribbean - what a way to bring in the New Year!  For those countries south of the equator, January is vacation time, but for these ministry and lay leaders in South America and the Caribbean, January is "back to school" time. They sacrifice time away from their families and home churches, traveling long distances to deepen their understanding of God's word and strengthen the bonds of brotherhood.

Dr. Douglas Jacoby taught classes that enlightened students about the Old Testament and Intertestamental Period. From new theological insights to the practical "100 Useful Passages," students felt better equipped to handle the scriptures accurately. Sam and Geri Laing presented lessons pertaining to "The Minister's Personal Life." These classes opened minds to build a real and lasting relationship with God, shore up family ties and consider the legacy we leave our children. During the close out session, MSOM Director John Porter called church leaders to let the Holy Spirit lead the way in planting new churches and to allow for unconventional means of getting the gospel to all nations. Countless "Aha!" moments occurred throughout the five-day class sessions. 

This January visit from our mission churches is not only a tradition for the MSOM, but it is a growing tradition. Three years ago, we had 15 leaders attend; last year, 34; and this year we saw 57 visiting church leaders. Of importance, more and more women are attending, which serves to strengthen the women's ministry throughout South America. 

One of the greatest benefits to this MSOM January session is the fellowship that occurs during breaks, over meals and in the homes of host families. These times together "give a face" to the yearly missions offerings. Our South Florida Church members get to meet and befriend brothers and sisters who are making a difference for God on another continent, in another language.
