Job Purpose

This position is responsible for all fundraising and development activities. The Chief Development Officer will design and implement a comprehensive plan to systematically and effectively strengthen the organization's overall fundraising capacity from individuals, corporations, and foundations as well as partner organizations.

Primary responsibilities include managing a team to accomplish overall goals and planning and implementing programs for raising major current and deferred financial gifts from individual donors.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Plan, communicate, manage, and evaluate the organization’s planned giving program
  • Actively work with the CEO and senior staff to develop and implement a comprehensive development strategy to include corporate, foundation, government grants, etc.
  • Develop and implement a stewardship program aimed at cultivating deeper ties with donors
  • Monitor all donor information; provide and present statistical analysis to board and senior leaders
  • Support and partner with the CEO and board members on all major fundraising initiatives including the planning and implementation of a capital campaign
  • Collaborate with the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to develop and implement financial strategy
  • Coordinate the charitable estate and gift planning process
  • Have primary responsibility for development and execution of all proposals; write and archive all proposals with a long-term relationship-management approach
  • Monitor and report regularly on the progress of the development program through agreed upon metrics
  • Identify, develop, and mentor the development team

Additional Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work with professional tax and legal professional advisors of parties interested in supporting HOPE worldwide
  • Work closely with HOPE worldwide communications staff to implement a comprehensive communication and marketing plan

Essential Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelor's degree required, Master's preferred
  • 10-plus years of professional experience in a nonprofit organization; demonstrated success in a development function (managing and forging relationships with multiple donor sources)
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral; ability to influence and engage a wide range of donors and build long-term relationships
  • Ability to positively impact both strategic and tactical fundraising initiatives
  • Proven experience in cultivating existing donor relationships over time
  • Ability to work both independently without close oversight, but also a team player who will productively engage with others at varying levels of seniority within and outside the organization
  • Experience managing others toward common goals by effectively delegating responsibilities, coaching individuals to success, and clearly articulating expected outcomes and timelines
  • Ability to construct, articulate, and implement annual strategic development plans
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with exceptional attention to detail
  • The CDO helps identify, cultivate, and steward his/her own portfolio of 75-100+ high net worth HOPE worldwide donors and prospects who have a capacity to give $100,000 or more
  • Must exercise significant judgment and confidentiality in working with prospects, volunteers and HOPE worldwide staff
  • Travel and evening/weekend work will be required
