typhoon update 1December 8, 2014 – Update #1: Typhoon Hagupit struck the Philippines late Saturday night. According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), an estimated 225,763 families, or more than one million people, are living in 687 evacuation centers across seven affected regions and Metro Manila.

HOPE worldwide is working to deliver clean drinking water to those in evacuation centers through the installation of water filter stations. As of December 6, four HOPE worldwide Philippines teams had been organized and had set up water filters in four large evacuations centers serving 565 families:

1. Agujo Elementary School – 105 families with 187 children

2. Cebu Technological University – 74 families with 144 children

3. Tapilon National High School – 245 families with 455 children

4. District Hospital, Poblacion Makato – 141 families, 534 persons

Evacuation leaders expressed their gratitude for these much needed filter stations, especially for those who cannot afford to buy clean water. A number of people have been in the centers since Thursday afternoon. According to the Tapilon evacuation leader, some of the families she met had decided to drink water from the center’s restroom since food was even outside their budgets.

The Philippines staff and volunteers are still assisting in the disaster recovery efforts following Typhoon Haiyan, and we are committed to extending these efforts to include the people affected by Typhoon Hagupit.
