Giving Ran Counter to 2010 National Trend

HOPE worldwide is grateful to its many financial supporters who stood behind our important work for the poor during 2010.

Randy Jordan, the organization's CEO, conveyed the thanks of the entire HOPE worldwide team, saying,
"In a year when many nonprofits saw decreased giving, we were humbled by the generosity of so many who were moved to help the weak and vulnerable. Starting with a large and immediate outpouring of funds to help Haiti earthquake victims early in the year, your generosity continued through the International Day of Giving in November and the traditional year-end giving season."

Strong church and direct personal support
Church and direct personal giving from church members exceeded $3.1 million for the year. More than $1.0 million was earmarked for Haiti disaster relief.

The International Day of Giving sponsored by the International Churches of Christ expanded in 2010, with 20 more churches participating than a year earlier and giving to support HOPE worldwide's global activity was up 5%. Some churches also pledged to increase their support in 2011. The international dimension of this fundraising event also increased, marked by the participation of churches on four continents.

The engagement of Church members in the Day of Giving extended beyond personal giving. Many reached out to family, friends and neighbors on behalf of HOPE worldwide. Some used a new on-line fundraising technology introduced by HOPE worldwide.

Individual giving was up more than 10% for the year due to the generous response of many individuals who provided direct personal support to HOPE worldwide. Encouraging trends included decisions by many donors to increase their giving levels. We also experienced an increase in monthly recurring gifts that help HOPE worldwide by providing for more consistent monthly cash flow to support its work for the poor throughout the year.

Tightening of funding from other sources
HOPE worldwide's traditional funding sources did not all show increases for the year in 2010. David Blenko, HOPE worldwide's Chief Development Officer, emphasized the significance of strong support from churches and individuals. "We are grateful for your generosity to help those in great need. Your giving is vitally important in a time when we are seeing a dramatic tightening of funding by corporations, foundations and governments and the needs of those we serve are great."

Global impact
The generous support of our contributors enables HOPE worldwide to serve more than 1 million people in over 60 countries on every inhabited continent. Jordan cited a number of current strategic initiatives he expects to be an important part of the organization's future:

  • Creation of a community service brigade initiative to mobilize volunteers and deliver much-needed supplies and medicine to impoverished areas in Latin America
  • Expansion and strengthening of the North America chapter model to increase volunteers' impact in their local communities
  • Continued development of HOPE worldwide's disaster response capacity to provide shelter, food and medical care to victims of disasters like the Haiti earthquake
  • Development of new facilities in Cambodia as part of HOPE worldwide's commitment to playing a leadership role in rebuilding the medical system there

Thank you to everyone who supported the work of HOPE worldwide in 2010 and we look forward to all the possibilities of 2011!
