Situation Report 26 October 2011 – Thailand Flood
Bangkok, Thailand - Overflowing reservoirs due to excessive rains has brought flooding to 28 of the 77 provinces in Thailand. As of today, 366 fatalities have been reported while 2.5 million others have been impacted by this disaster. In addition, four million acres of agriculture land are flooded.
The capital of Thailand, Bangkok, known for its Chao Praya River, is flooded. Residents have moved into evacuation centers such as Don Muang Airport, only to be moved again to other areas as the Don Muang area is also reporting flood conditions.
Bangkok streets are very quiet. Gone are the sounds of bustling streets and traffic. Residents are parking their cars on the sky toll way while sandbags are being placed around houses and offices in an effort to slow down the encroaching flood waters. Schools are closed for the next two weeks, while a public holiday is declared until the end of October. All this is to encourage people to leave Bangkok as flooding is expected to cover the city by this weekend.
This morning, residents of Bangkok are discussing the new ‘worst case scenario’ released by the government. Some areas expect the water to be as high as two meters during high tide. Thailand’s Prime Minister has warned that it may take another month for the water to recede.
The Bangkok Church has reached out to help those who have been effected. Currently there are 14 families from the Bangkok Church who have had their homes flooded. Four or these families are taking shelter at the church office, while 10 more are with relatives and neighbors; these are 20% of 105 members in the Bangkok Church. A few days ago, about 10 more disciples also evacuated their homes because of the high risk of floods. Other disciples are planning to leave for Chonburi or another nearby city to avoid the 2 meters of water that are expected to sweep through Bangkok this weekend. The need of shelter , food, and other essentials is being met internally by the Bangkok Church, but if the weekend brings more casualties, they may not be able to meet them all.

Our Response
HOPE worldwide Thailand and its volunteers packed and distributed food to the flood victims. With four water purifying devices, 13 volunteers, are now packing and distributing drinking water to residents in the community as water has become a scarce commodity.
In coordination with FROC (Flood Relief Operation Center) of Thailand, HOPE worldwide is working with our local partners in organizing an evacuation center in Bangkok that would house 100 foreign citizens who need housing.
Please Pray
The siege is far from over as the biggest challenge will happen in the coming days. Pray for the city of Bangkok and its residents as they face the worse flooding in the last 50 years.
