Like Little Children, by Virag Szabad (Review)

Any writer, teacher or preacher is always looking for ways to demonstrate his or her points more effectively. Virag Szabad found that way by using the tender and intimate times with her children as a tool to communicate basic truths about God. In her book, Like Little Children, Virag poignantly demonstrates the nature of God and the natural response to God’s love and mercy. She accomplishes this by capturing vulnerable moments of honesty provided by her son, Robi, and her daughter, Eni. She also shares her heart as a mother, showing the fierce and protective love of a parent, and compares that with the unconditional and perfect love of God.

Like Little Children is not a book about children, nor is it a parenting manual. While I enjoyed reading about little Robi and Eni’s personalities and escapades, and recognized good lessons for any parent, this book goes deep into the subjects that every Christian views as vital to growing in the faith. With chapter titles such as “Little Moon” and “Berci Bunny”, Virag addresses the subjects of obedience, forgiveness, trust, and love. Her final chapter, entitled, “Cinderella and the Prince” thoroughly and practically teaches on God’s plan for romantic love and marriage. Virag has learned so much from her children and has gained tremendous insights from watching them grow. But she reminds us that we are all surrounded by people or events that demonstrate the working of God. We only have to open our eyes, as she has, to see the spiritual truths that are waiting to be discovered.

One of the anecdotes that Virag recounts has to do with Robi’s reconciliation with a playmate that hurt his feelings. Robi’s tender compassion made an impact on his teacher and on Virag herself: “Kids are able to move on from a hurt and play together wonderfully because their desire to play together and be friends overcomes their desire to get even.” Virag makes the comparison with God’s grace: “God…considers a relationship with Him more important than my debt to Him.”

This is Virag’s first book, written first in Hungarian and translated into English. Virag and her husband Peti became Christians as college students, married, and eventually became leaders in the church in Budapest, Hungary. Like Little Children is not only encouraging for the truths that the reader will find in its pages, but also because of the realization that God’s word and God’s ways are being proclaimed in Hungary, and even, “out of the mouths of babes.” Virag was interviewed by the Hungarian State Television recently, and several members of the church there have used the book for evangelistic purposes. You can watch her interview on YouTube: (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tPamhLZeV-I -- make sure to click on the “cc” option in order to read the subtitles in English). The book can be ordered through Discipleship Publications International (the link is: http://www.dpibooks.org/Default.aspx?tabid=59&cid=18&sid=3&ProductID=481&page=1) and through Illumination Publishers International: www.IPIbooks.com . I recommend this book for those who are seeking to understand God and his love for the first time, and for any person who is looking for a fresh perspective in his or her relationship with God.
